Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum holds one of the largest collections of Egyptian artifacts on the West Coast. Expect a mid-sized museum with genuine ancient objects: mummies, sarcophagi, jewelry, pottery, and temple reproductions spread across two floors. The atmosphere is deliberately mystical and a bit dated, which some find charming and others find slightly odd. The planetarium next door runs astronomy shows several times a day and is usually the most popular part with kids. Plan on 90 minutes to two hours if you read most of the labels; you can easily do it in 45 if you're a quick walker.

Best time to visit is spring or fall when Bay Area weather is mildest. Summer gets hot and the grounds are less pleasant; winter can be rainy. Expect to pay around $25–40 per adult including the planetarium show; children and seniors get discounts. It's rarely crowded on weekdays.

Honest tips: Prioritize the actual Egyptian collection on the upper floor and the outdoor replica garden if the weather's decent. Skip the lower-level "Rosicrucian history" rooms unless you're genuinely into early 20th-century occult orders. Pair it with a walk around the beautiful park grounds afterward; they're free and often the highlight for many visitors.
