Should You Walk Warsaw's Royal Route?

The Royal Route is essentially a long, straight stroll from the Presidential Palace down to the Old Town. Expect a mix of grand 18th-century palaces, churches, and university buildings that slowly give way to the rebuilt baroque façades and market square of the UNESCO-listed Stare Miasto. It’s an easy, mostly flat 3–4 km walk that takes 1.5–3 hours depending on how often you stop. In summer it’s pleasant but crowded; you’ll share the pavement with tour groups and street musicians. The experience is more “pleasant city walk with history” than “wow” sightseeing—nice architecture, decent people-watching, and cafés every few blocks.

Best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September). Expect to pay around $0–35 total: completely free if you wander on your own, up to about $35 if you add an audio-guide app or a small-group walking tour. Skip the overpriced amber shops and overlong palace interior tours unless you’re really into Polish history; instead, grab a bench in Castle Square, watch the crowds, and continue into the Old Town walls at your own pace. Bring comfortable shoes—the cobblestones get old fast—and go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst heat and tour buses.
