The Royal Route is a pleasant 4–5 km stroll from the Old Town down Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat to Łazienki Park. Expect a mix of restored baroque churches, elegant 18th- and 19th-century palaces, leafy sidewalks, and the occasional modern interruption. The walk itself is easy and flat; you’ll pass the Presidential Palace, University of Warsaw, and several pretty squares. At a relaxed pace with stops for photos or coffee, it takes 2–3 hours without entering any buildings. Add another 90 minutes if you want to visit the Royal Castle or Łazienki Palace.
Best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September). Summers are warm but crowded and can be hot; winters are cold, short days, and many outdoor café tables disappear. Expect to pay around $15–40 total per person: free if you do it independently with a map or audio guide app, $25–40 for a small-group guided walk, or $120+ if you book a private guide for two people. Food and drinks along the route add another $10–20.
Pick the stretch between the Old Town and Łazienki Park and linger in the park itself — it’s the prettiest part. Skip the overpriced souvenir stalls near the Castle Square and don’t feel obligated to enter every church unless you really enjoy baroque interiors. Bring comfortable shoes and download an offline map; the route is well signposted but the explanatory plaques are sparse.
