San Telmo Market: Worth Visiting?

San Telmo Market is a big, crowded Sunday street fair that takes over the historic neighborhood's main square and several blocks. Expect antiques, vintage clothes, handmade leather goods, tango performers, and plenty of street food stalls. The atmosphere is lively with live music, but it gets packed by midday – think shoulder-to-shoulder browsing among locals and tourists. The covered market building on Defensa street operates daily with butchers, produce, and a few cafes, but the real event is the outdoor fair on Sundays.

The best time is spring or fall (September–November or March–May) when the weather is pleasant for walking. Summers are hot and humid, winters chilly. Plan to arrive around 10–11am to beat the worst crowds. Expect to pay around $15–40 USD total per person: minimal entry (it's free), a couple of empanadas or a choripan for $4–8, coffee or beer for $3–6, and small souvenirs or antiques anywhere from $5 to $50 depending on what you choose.

Pick up some good Argentine leather belts or mate gourds if you like that sort of thing – the quality is decent for the price. Skip the overpriced "antique" silverware and most of the touristy art prints; they're rarely worth it. Wear comfortable shoes, keep your bag in front of you, and don't try to see everything in one go – wander a few blocks then duck into a bar for a break.
