Sandbank Picnic in the Maldives: Worth It?

A sandbank picnic is exactly what it sounds like: a speedboat takes you 30–60 minutes from your resort to a tiny strip of white sand that appears only at low tide. You get a few hours there with basic shade, cold drinks, and a simple lunch (usually grilled fish, rice, fruit, and water). The water is often glassy and shallow, perfect for swimming and easy snorkeling right off the sand. Expect it to feel very exposed – intense sun, no toilets, and sometimes other boats stopping nearby. It’s peaceful when empty but can feel a bit theme-park-ish if several groups arrive at once. Dolphins sometimes cruise past on the boat ride, which is a nice bonus.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and the sandbanks are more predictable. May–November can be rougher with bigger swells that sometimes swallow the bank entirely. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on whether it’s a basic shared trip or a private half-day with better food and snorkel gear. Private is noticeably better if your budget allows.

Tip: combine the sandbank stop with a guided snorkel at a house reef on the way back – it turns the day into something more substantial. Skip the ultra-cheap options that only give you 45 minutes on the sand; the journey isn’t worth it for that little time. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and your own waterproof bag – the boats rarely have enough shade or storage.
