Sandboarding in the Dubai desert is a fun, slightly chaotic add-on to a classic dune-bashing safari. Expect to be picked up from your hotel in a 4x4, driven out to the red Lahbab dunes, then spend an hour or so racing up and down steep sand slopes on a waxed board. It's like snowboarding but softer, slower, and you’ll eat a lot of sand. Most tours combine it with 30-45 minutes of aggressive dune bashing, a short camel ride, sunset photos, and sometimes a basic BBQ dinner with henna and belly dancing if you book the evening slot. The whole experience usually lasts 5–7 hours door-to-door. It’s touristy but genuinely enjoyable if you like adrenaline and desert scenery.
Best time is November to March when it’s cooler (daytime highs 25–30°C). Skip summer unless you enjoy 45°C heat. Expect to pay around $50–$90 per person for a standard shared tour that includes sandboarding; add $20–40 if you want a private transfer or dune buggy option. Evening tours with dinner sit at the higher end of that range.
Tip: Book the version that includes both dune bashing and sandboarding but skip the full dinner show if you want to keep it short and cheap – the desert sunset is the real highlight. Wear closed shoes, bring a buff or scarf for your face, and don’t bother with expensive sandboard rentals; the ones they give you are fine for a couple of runs.
