A day spent on the Prussian palace circuit usually means Charlottenburg Palace in the morning followed by a train or bus out to Potsdam for Sanssouci and the surrounding park. Expect polished rococo interiors, endless gilt and marble, and a lot of walking on gravel paths. The palaces are beautiful but can feel similar after the third one; the real draw is the sheer scale of the gardens and the contrast between the formal Prussian design and the relaxed Berliners picnicking on the lawns. In Potsdam the crowds thin out once you move past the main Sanssouci building into the newer palace or the Chinese teahouse area.
Best time is May to early October when everything is open and the gardens are in bloom; shoulder months (April and late October) give you decent light without the worst crowds. Expect to pay around €35–55 per person for a combo ticket covering two or three sites plus transport, or €60–90 if you add a small-group guided option. Audio guides are usually included with the tickets.
Pick Charlottenburg if your time is short; skip the New Palace in Potsdam unless you’re a serious fan of even more rococo furniture. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water — the grounds are larger than they look on a map.
