Scavi Tour in Rome: Worth It?

The Scavi tour takes you underneath St. Peter’s Basilica into the ancient Roman necropolis where archaeologists believe St. Peter was buried. You walk through narrow, dimly lit passages lined with pagan and early Christian tombs, then end up inside the basilica near the altar. Expect a serious, slightly claustrophobic experience with a small group and a guide who knows the archaeology. It lasts about 90 minutes and involves stairs and uneven ground; it’s not suitable if you have mobility issues or feel uncomfortable in tight underground spaces. The tour finishes near the main basilica floor, so you can continue exploring upstairs afterward.

Best time to visit is spring (April–June) or fall (September–October) when Rome is milder and tour slots are easier to get. Summer is hot and crowded, winter can be damp underground. Expect to pay around €20–35 per person including the mandatory guided portion. Book at least two or three months ahead; same-day or even next-week tickets are almost impossible.

Tip: Choose the earliest morning slot you can get – you’ll avoid the worst crowds both underground and in the basilica afterward. Skip it if you’re short on time or mainly interested in art and spectacle; the Vatican Museums and basilica dome give a bigger visual payoff for less planning hassle. If you’re into history and archaeology, though, this is one of the most interesting things you can do in Rome.
