Expect an enormous Baroque palace with lavish state rooms, crystal chandeliers, and frescoed ceilings that scream Habsburg excess. The adjoining gardens are vast, formal, and surprisingly peaceful once you get away from the main fountain area. A full visit (palace interior plus gardens) takes 2–3 hours. The interior can feel crowded and a bit stuffy in peak season; the real pleasure is wandering the landscaped grounds, climbing the hill for the view, or grabbing a coffee in the café afterward. It’s impressive but not intimate – think grand spectacle rather than hidden gem.
Best time is late spring or early autumn. Summer weekends are packed with tour groups; winter is quieter but the gardens lose their color. Expect to pay around €50–80 per person total, covering a skip-the-line ticket with a guided interior tour plus garden access. Audio guides are cheaper if you prefer to wander alone.
Tip: Book a morning slot and do the palace first, then spend the rest of your time in the gardens – they’re the highlight. Skip the zoo and the maze unless you have kids or extra hours; they dilute the experience and add cost. Bring comfortable shoes – you’ll walk a lot.
