Should You Visit Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna?

Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and still one of the better ones in Europe. Expect a pleasant half-day visit with solid animal habitats, a surprisingly large panda house, elephants, big cats, and a nice polar bear area. It’s clean, well laid out, and compact enough that you won’t be exhausted after walking it. Families with kids will enjoy it most, but adults who like animals will also have a good time. It sits right next to the Schönbrunn Palace grounds, so it’s easy to combine both in one day if you have the energy.

Best time is spring or early autumn. Summer gets hot and crowded, especially weekends. Winter is quiet and some animals are less active, but you’ll often have the place almost to yourself. Expect to pay around €25–€35 for a standard adult ticket. Combo tickets with the palace or a guided tour push that to €45–€80 depending on what you choose. The basic ticket is usually enough.

Honest tips: Get the regular zoo ticket and walk it at your own pace; skip the expensive private family tours unless you have young kids who need structure. The children’s museum inside the zoo is overrated for most visitors. Arrive at opening if you can — the animals are far more active in the morning and lines at the entrance stay short.
