Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and still one of the better ones in Europe. Expect a pleasant half-day wander through a mix of baroque-era buildings and modern enclosures. The animals are well kept, the grounds are clean and easy to navigate, and the sheer variety (pandas, polar bears, elephants, sea lions, orangutans, and a solid reptile house) keeps both adults and kids engaged. It never feels overwhelmingly crowded except on summer weekends. You’ll walk a lot, so wear comfortable shoes; the layout is mostly flat but spreads out more than it first appears.
The best time is spring or autumn on a weekday morning. Summers are hot and busy, winters are quiet and surprisingly manageable because many animals stay outside. Expect to pay around €25–35 per adult including the basic ticket; add €5–10 if you want the guided tour or a combined ticket with the palace gardens. Food inside is decent but overpriced, so many people bring a sandwich.
Honest tips: prioritize the giant panda enclosure and the orangutan outdoor area early in the day; both get mobbed later. Skip the small petting zoo section unless you’re traveling with very young children — it’s underwhelming compared to the rest. Get the map at the entrance and plot a loose loop; trying to see everything exhaustively will just tire you out.
