Should You Visit Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna?

Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and still one of the better ones in Europe. Expect a pleasant half-day wander through a historic setting with surprisingly large enclosures for many animals, including giant pandas, polar bears, elephants, and a solid collection of big cats. It's clean, well-kept, and easy to navigate on foot. The crowds can feel heavy in summer, but the layout absorbs people better than most zoos. Animals are generally active if you visit early; by mid-afternoon many retreat indoors or nap.

Best time is spring or fall when temperatures are mild and families are fewer. Summer gets hot and packed; winter is quiet but some outdoor animals are less visible. Expect to pay around €25-35 per adult including the basic ticket; add a bit more if you want the guided tour or feeding sessions. Kids under 6 are usually free, older children roughly half price.

Honest tips: Prioritize the morning for the panda and elephant areas before lines form. Skip the reptile house if you're short on time; it's decent but nothing special compared to the outdoor habitats. Bring your own snacks; the on-site food is average and overpriced like every zoo on earth.
