The Johannesburg science centre is a solid, no-frills interactive museum aimed mainly at school groups and families. Expect large halls filled with hands-on exhibits covering physics, biology, energy, and space. Some displays feel dated, but the planetarium shows and the small dinosaur section are genuinely good. It’s indoors and climate-controlled, making it a practical half-day activity when Johannesburg weather turns. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here.

Best time to go is weekday mornings during the school term to avoid crowds. Summer (Nov–Feb) can be hot and busy with holiday groups; winter (Jun–Aug) is cooler and quieter. Expect to pay around R80–R150 per adult, with kids roughly half price and planetarium shows adding R40–R70 extra. Combo tickets for multiple shows are usually the better value.

Pick the planetarium and the interactive physics gallery; skip the tired “health and body” section and the gift shop unless you need magnets. Tip: download the centre’s basic floor plan before you arrive — signage isn’t great and you’ll waste time backtracking. It’s not world-class, but it’s honest, local, and works well as a rainy-day option or if you’re travelling with curious kids.
