Scuba Diving in Cancun: What to Know

Expect warm, clear water with decent visibility most of the year and a mix of shallow reefs, the MUSA underwater museum, and a few wrecks. The diving is pleasant rather than world-class; you're not getting Palau or the Maldives here. Most trips are short boat rides from the hotel zone. You'll see plenty of tropical fish, nurse sharks if you're lucky, and the occasional turtle. It's a solid introduction for beginners or a convenient add-on if you're already in Cancun.

Best time is November through April when the water is calmer and visibility is usually 15-25 meters. Summer and early fall bring warmer water but more rain, stronger currents, and occasional sargassum on the beaches. Expect to pay around $90-160 for a two-tank morning dive trip including gear and transport; discover scuba is roughly $140-200. Night dives or trips to Cozumel run higher.

Pick a smaller operator that goes to less crowded sites if you can; the big hotel-zone boats can feel like cattle calls. Skip the cenote-and-dive combo packages unless you're already a confident diver; they often rush the schedule. Always check recent diver reviews for equipment quality and guide ratios before you book.
