Scuba Diving in Los Cabos: What to Know

Expect warm water (75–82°F) with decent visibility, though it’s rarely the crystal-clear Caribbean experience. The diving is mostly gentle drift dives along rocky walls and seamounts. You’ll see plenty of tropical fish, moray eels, stingrays, sea turtles, and the occasional bull shark or manta. It’s a solid choice if you’re already in Cabo, but it’s not a world-class destination—more like a fun add-on to a beach vacation. Most boats leave from Cabo San Lucas harbor; trips usually include two dives and take 4–6 hours total.

The best time is May through November when the water is warmest and seas are calmer. Winter (Dec–Mar) brings colder water, rougher rides, and lower visibility from plankton blooms, though you may see more sharks and whales. Expect to pay around $150–$220 for a two-tank certified dive trip including gear and lunch. Snorkelers pay roughly half that on the same boats.

Pick a morning departure to avoid the afternoon wind and chop. Skip the giant group “cruise-style” boats that combine snorkelers, divers, and sightseers if you want a proper dive experience—smaller operator trips with 6–8 divers are better. Make sure your operator actually visits two proper dive sites instead of one site plus “the arch.” Bring your own computer if you have one; rental gear is usually fine but dated.
