Scuba Diving in Phuket: What You Need to Know

Phuket offers easy access to decent diving with warm water, decent visibility (usually 10-20m), and a mix of reefs, walls, and wrecks. Most trips head to the Racha Islands or King Cruiser wreck. Expect healthy soft corals, plenty of tropical fish, the occasional turtle or reef shark, and the standard Southeast Asian crowd of divers on speedboats. It's not world-class like the Similans, but it's convenient if you're already in Phuket and a solid choice for beginners or a few fun dives. The boat rides are short (30-90 minutes), the sites are straightforward, and most operators run daily trips.

The best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmest and visibility is best. May to October brings rougher seas and rain, though some sheltered sites remain doable. Expect to pay around $120-180 for a two-dive day trip including gear, lunch and transfers. Intro dives for beginners run $140-200, while a 3-dive trip pushes toward $170-220. Liveaboards to better sites like the Similans cost significantly more if you want to upgrade later.

Pick a full-day Racha Yai or Racha Noi trip if it's your first time; the sites are reliable and the travel time is short. Skip the cheap mass-market trips that bundle parasailing, banana boats and snorkeling with 30+ people on one boat—you'll spend more time waiting than diving. Choose smaller groups and check recent diver reviews for equipment quality and guide ratios.
