Liveaboards to better sites like the Similans cost significantly more if you want to upgrade later.

Pick a full-day Racha Yai or Racha Noi trip if it's your first time; the sites are reliable and the travel time is short. Skip the cheap mass-market trips that bundle parasailing, banana boats and snorkeling with 30+ people on one boat—you'll spend more time waiting than diving.
