Scuba Diving in San Diego: What to Know

San Diego offers easy shore diving and boat trips with decent visibility (15-40 ft), cold water (55-68°F), and a mix of kelp forests, canyons, and lots of sea lions. Most visitors do La Jolla for their first dives because it's accessible and has reliable marine life. Expect to see garibaldi, leopard sharks, bat rays, and playful sea lions that can get in your face. The diving is relaxed rather than dramatic—think pleasant rather than world-class. It's a solid add-on if you're already in the city, especially if you have some experience or are comfortable in cold water.

Best time is late summer through early fall (August–October) when water is warmest and visibility is best. Winter brings bigger swells and poorer viz but more pelagic action. A two-tank boat dive or guided shore dive will run you $150–$250 including gear and guide. Add $100–$200 if you need rental gear or a refresher. Full-day trips with two dives usually land around $200–$300 per person.

Pick a guided La Jolla shore dive or simple boat trip if it's your first time here; the kelp beds and sea lion colonies are the highlight. Skip the super-cheap snorkel tours if you actually want to scuba—they're often too shallow and crowded. Bring your own 7mm wetsuit or rent a good one; being cold ruins the day faster than anything else.
