Scuba Diving in Panama City: What to Know

Panama City Beach offers decent wreck and reef diving in the Gulf of Mexico, typically in 60-100 ft of water. Visibility ranges from 30-60 ft on good days but can drop to 15-20 ft after storms or during algae blooms. You'll see barracuda, grouper, snapper, occasional rays, and artificial reefs from sunken ships and barges. The diving is relaxed rather than dramatic—think steady bottom time on wrecks rather than vibrant coral walls. Most trips are two-tank morning or afternoon charters; boat rides are short, usually under 30 minutes.

Best time is late April through early September when water is warmest (78-86°F) and seas are calmer. July and August bring the clearest water but also afternoon thunderstorms. Winter diving is possible but cold (water in the low 60s) and often rougher, requiring 5-7mm wetsuits. Expect to pay around $120-180 for a two-tank boat trip including gear rental; add $300-450 for a Discover Scuba or open-water certification course if you're new. Nitrox fills and private charters push the upper end.

Tip: Choose operators that dive the deeper wrecks like the Black Bart or the tugboats if you're certified—they're more interesting than the shallow 'diver playground' sites. Skip shore diving here; the beaches are sandy with almost nothing to see. Bring your own computer and mask if you have them—rental gear is functional but often well-used.
