Sempione Park is Milan’s big central green space behind the Sforza Castle. Expect a pleasant, well-used city park rather than wilderness: wide lawns, tree-lined paths, a small lake, and plenty of locals lounging, playing football or reading. It’s easy to reach on foot from the Duomo area and makes a relaxing break from sightseeing. You’ll share the grass with families, students and office workers; it’s relaxed but not secluded.
Best time is late spring through early autumn, especially May–June and September when the weather is warm but not punishingly hot. Go on a weekday morning or early afternoon to avoid weekend crowds. A basic picnic for two (bread, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, a bottle of wine or beer from a nearby shop) will run you around €15–30 total. Add €5–8 per person if you buy coffee or gelato afterwards from one of the park kiosks.
Pick up supplies from a neighbourhood bakery or deli before you enter rather than the overpriced park vendors. Skip the rowboat rental unless you have kids; it’s fun for ten minutes but not worth the hassle. Bring a blanket or use one of the many benches, and don’t forget to wander past the Arch of Peace at the far end before you leave.
