Shark Cage Diving in Cape Town: What to Know

Expect a full-day trip (or overnight) heading two hours from Cape Town to Gansbaai or similar spots. You’ll get a briefing, climb into a steel cage in groups of 4–6, and sit just below the surface while bait lures great whites past you. Visibility is often 5–10 m; sometimes the sharks are everywhere, other times you might wait an hour between sightings. The boat rocks, the water is cold (13–16 °C), and there’s no guarantee you’ll see sharks – that’s the honest part. Most people come back buzzing even if the action is moderate.

Best time is April to October when the great whites are reliably around. December–March is possible but sightings drop. Expect to pay around $250–$400 per person for a standard day trip from Cape Town including transport, gear, and lunch. Add-ons like GoPro rental or photos push it higher.

Tip: choose a smaller boat with a maximum of 12–15 divers if you can – it means less crowding at the cage and more time in the water. Skip the multi-day “shark safaris” unless you really want extra sea time; a single well-run day is enough for most travelers.
