The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is impressive in scale and detail. Expect soaring white marble, thousands of Swarovski crystals in the chandeliers, and a vast carpet that took years to weave. The experience is peaceful when it's not crowded, but during peak visiting hours it can feel like a busy tourist site rather than a spiritual one. Women must wear the provided black abayas (they're free and reasonably clean), and everyone needs to cover shoulders and knees. The visit itself usually takes 45-90 minutes depending on how much you want to photograph and wander.
Best time to visit is November to March when it's cooler; avoid June-September unless you enjoy 40°C+ heat. Early morning on weekdays is ideal to beat the crowds. Expect to pay around $45-90 total from Dubai: budget options are shared half-day trips, while higher-end ones include private transport, a decent guide, and possibly lunch or Corniche stops. From Abu Dhabi itself it's much cheaper, often under $30 including transfer.
Tip: Skip the full-day tours that cram in Heritage Village and the Corniche unless you really want quantity over quality. Just do the mosque with a good guide who explains the architecture and Islamic design. Bring socks if you're fussy about walking barefoot on the prayer hall carpet after removing shoes.
