Shinsekai at night is loud, neon-lit, and unpretentious – exactly what makes the food tour fun. Expect to walk through retro arcades and narrow alleys with a small group while stopping at 5 or so local spots. You'll try 10–15 small Osaka dishes: kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), takoyaki, doteyaki (miso-stewed offal), tonpeiyaki (cabbage and pork omelette), and a few surprises like oden or yakisoba. It's casual standing or counter seating, lots of chatting with the guide and locals, and plenty of beer or highball if you drink. The whole thing lasts about 3 hours and feels more like hanging out than a formal tour.
Best time is autumn through spring; summer humidity makes the walking sweaty and the alleys less pleasant. Evenings start around 6 pm – that's when the neon looks right and the places are lively. Expect to pay around ¥9,000–13,000 per person including food and a couple of drinks. It's good value compared to eating the same amount on your own while trying to navigate the area.
Tip: always save room for the final kushikatsu – go for the classic cabbage, shrimp, and quail egg. Skip anything billed as "premium" wagyu or uni; it's not why you're in Shinsekai. Wear comfortable shoes and go hungry.
