A full-day speedboat trip to the Similan Islands is a long but rewarding day out. Expect about 1.5 hours each way on the boat, often in choppy conditions, plus several snorkel stops over healthy coral reefs and a couple of short beach visits. The water is usually clear, turtles and reef fish are common, and the islands themselves are genuinely beautiful white-sand bays backed by jungle. It’s a packed schedule though – you’ll be on and off the boat multiple times and it can feel rushed. Many people find it worth the travel time; others wish they’d stayed closer to shore.
Best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmest and visibility is good. The islands are closed May through October. Expect to pay around $130–$190 per person from Phuket, including snorkel gear, lunch, and park fees. Trips from Khao Lak are slightly cheaper and involve less time on the water.
Honest tip: choose a smaller group tour if possible – the big boats can have 40+ people splashing around the same snorkel spot. Skip the add-on “sunset cruise” or extra islands if you’re already tired; the standard Similan day trip gives you the best bits without burning you out.
