Expect warm, clear water with decent reefs and a good chance of seeing tropical fish, turtles, and sometimes manta rays. The experience is usually a full-day boat trip from Sanur or the east coast out to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. You’ll make 3–4 snorkel stops, each 30–45 minutes. The water is generally calm in the protected bays but can get choppy between sites; visibility ranges from 10–25 meters depending on season and recent rain. It’s a solid half-day in the water with lunch on the boat or beach. Crowds are common at the popular spots, so you won’t have the reef to yourself.
The best time is May to September when seas are calmer and visibility is better. December–March often has rougher water and poorer visibility, though it’s still doable on good days. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a day trip including gear, guide, lunch, and transport from southern Bali. Private charters or smaller groups sit at the higher end.
Pick a tour that visits fewer, less-crowded sites rather than the standard four-stop package if you want a more relaxed experience. Skip the cheapest mass boats that pack 30+ people if you dislike noise and rushed snorkeling; a mid-range small-group trip is worth the extra money.
