Snorkeling Between Tectonic Plates in Iceland

Snorkeling between the North American and Eurasian plates at Silfra is genuinely unique. You float in crystal-clear, 2–4°C glacial water inside a rift where the continents are literally pulling apart. Visibility is often 100+ meters, so the underwater scenery of rocky walls, deep fissures, and bright green algae feels otherworldly. The snorkel itself lasts about 30–40 minutes; you’ll be in a thick drysuit with hood, gloves, and fins. It’s surprisingly comfortable once you’re in, but the water is cold enough that your face will go numb quickly. Most people describe it as peaceful and slightly surreal rather than athletic.

The best time is May to September when roads are open and weather is more predictable. June–August sees the warmest air temperatures (still often 8–14°C) and longest daylight. Expect to pay around $250–$350 per person for a guided snorkeling tour from Reykjavik, including transport, gear, and a short stop at Þingvellir. Tours that combine Silfra with the Golden Circle are convenient but make for a very long day.

Pick the standard snorkeling trip rather than trying to add scuba diving if you’re not already certified—snorkeling is plenty impressive here. Skip the cheapest operators; go with an experienced guide who takes thermal comfort seriously. Bring a good base layer and a change of clothes. If you get cold easily, this might not be for you.
