Expect warm, greenish water with decent but not spectacular visibility (usually 5-15m). You'll see parrotfish, sergeant majors, tangs, and the occasional ray or turtle if you're lucky. Most trips head to calmer spots around Playa del Coco, Hermosa or the Papagayo peninsula. It's a relaxed half-day activity rather than a world-class snorkel destination – good for beginners or as a low-key addition to a beach week, not a dedicated snorkeling trip.
Best time is December to April during the dry season: flatter seas, less rain, and better underwater visibility. June to October brings cheaper rates but rougher water, stronger currents, and frequent cancellations. Expect to pay around $65–110 per person for a half-day boat trip including gear and snacks; private charters or catamaran tours run $300–650 for small groups.
Pick a small-group boat tour that visits two or three sites rather than the big party catamarans if you actually want to see fish instead of drink. Skip the beach snorkeling right in front of the big hotels – it's usually poor with stirred-up sand and few fish. Bring your own mask if you have one; rental gear is functional but often well-used.
