Most snorkeling from Panama City means a full-day boat trip to either the Caribbean side (Portobelo or nearby reefs) or a flight/boat combo to the San Blas islands. Expect a long day: early pickup, 2-3 hours in transit each way, and about 2-3 hours actually in the water across one or two spots. The reefs are decent rather than spectacular; you’ll see colorful corals, parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional ray or turtle if conditions are good. Visibility is usually 10-20 meters but drops after rain. It’s a solid introduction if you’re short on time in the capital, though serious snorkelers often head straight to Bocas or San Blas independently.
Best time is the dry season, mid-December to April, when seas are calmer and visibility is better. Avoid September-November when rains stir up the water. Expect to pay around $130-200 per person for a day tour including transport, basic gear, lunch, and a guide. Private or smaller-group options sit at the higher end.
Tip: Choose the Caribbean mainland trips if you want simpler logistics and lower cost; skip San Blas day tours unless you’re willing to pay extra for the flight – the “all-inclusive” ones often feel rushed. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; rental gear is functional but sometimes old.
