Snorkeling in Cancun: What You Should Know

Expect a half-day trip that usually includes a boat ride out to the Great Maya Reef (actually closer to Puerto Morelos than downtown Cancun). You'll spend 30-45 minutes in the water, swimming over shallow coral with decent numbers of tropical fish, occasional turtles, and rays if you're lucky. The water is warm and clear most of the year, but the reef itself is only okay compared to places like Belize or Bonaire; it's a solid introduction if you've never snorkeled before. Boats carry 10-30 people, so don't expect total peace and quiet.

Best time is May through early September when the water is calmest and visibility is usually 10-20 meters. December to March can be windy with rougher seas and more canceled trips. Expect to pay around $45-80 per person for a standard half-day tour that includes basic gear, snacks, and transport from your hotel. Private or smaller-group options push $100-150.

Pick a morning departure to avoid the afternoon wind and crowds. Skip any tour that promises you'll swim with dolphins or sharks in the open ocean; those are usually captive dolphin encounters or baited shark dives that aren't worth it. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one that fits well; rental gear is often average.
