Should You Visit Dubai's Souks?

A souk visit in Dubai means walking through the busy, covered markets of Old Dubai – mainly the Gold Souk, Spice Souk, and Textile Souk. Expect narrow alleys packed with shops selling gold jewelry, spices, scarves, perfumes, and souvenirs. It’s noisy, crowded, and smells of cardamom, incense, and sweat. The experience is genuine but very tourist-oriented; most vendors will call out to you and start bargaining immediately. The Gold Souk is dazzling with its neon and endless display cases, while the Spice Souk feels more traditional and sensory. It’s a short, intense visit – usually 1–2 hours on foot – best combined with an abra boat crossing of the creek.

The best time is November to March when it’s cooler; avoid midday in summer when the heat inside the covered lanes becomes unbearable. Expect to pay around $25–80 per person if you join a small-group guided tour that includes transport and an abra ride. Independent visitors pay nothing to enter but should budget $20–50 for taxis or the metro plus whatever you buy. One honest tip: focus on the Spice and Textile souks if you want interesting photos and affordable gifts; skip most of the Gold Souk unless you’re actually shopping for jewelry – it’s repetitive after ten shops. Another tip: learn a few Arabic numbers and practice polite but firm bargaining. Never accept the first price.
