Expect a crowded but worthwhile 45-75 minute experience. A skip-the-line guided tour gets you past the 30-90 minute queues that form most days, then takes you inside to see the golden mosaics, marble floors, and high altar without feeling completely overwhelmed. The guide explains the 800-year history and points out details you'd miss on your own, after which you're usually free to linger or head out. It's not peaceful—St. Mark's is one of Europe's busiest churches—but the guided version makes the visit far more intelligible than wandering in alone.
Best time is April-June or September-October when Venice has decent weather but fewer crowds than July and August. Mornings (first tours of the day) are preferable to afternoons. Expect to pay around $55-85 for a basic skip-the-line guided tour of the basilica only; combined tours with Doge's Palace run $110-150 and are only worth it if you actually plan to visit both sites the same day.
Tip: choose the shorter basilica-only tour unless you're genuinely interested in the palace. Skip the audioguide version and pay a bit more for a live guide. Book for 9 or 9:30am if available—earlier slots let you enjoy the rest of the square before the tour groups descend.
