Expect crowds, marble, and scale that genuinely overwhelms. The basilica is enormous, ornate, and still an active church, so you'll share space with tour groups, pilgrims, and people praying. A proper tour gets you past the worst lines, explains the art and history without the usual fluff, and often includes climbing the dome for killer views over Rome. The full experience (basilica floor plus dome) takes 2–3 hours. Security is airport-style and can eat 30–45 minutes at peak times.
Best time is shoulder season (March–May or September–October). Go early morning on a weekday if you can. Summer is hot, crowded, and the lines stretch forever. Expect to pay around €35–70 per person depending on whether it's a small group, whether it includes the dome climb, and how much Vatican Museums access is bundled in. Skip the massive group tours that funnel hundreds through at once.
Honest tips: Do the dome climb if you're reasonably fit – the 360-degree view is one of the best in Rome and worth the extra effort and cost. Skip trying to see everything in one day if you're also doing the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel; your brain and feet will give up. Book something that lets you skip the main security queue. Dress code is enforced: knees and shoulders covered for everyone.
