Expect a relaxed 2-hour session that usually starts with 15-20 minutes of basic instruction on the beach (how to hold the paddle, stance, turning). Then you head into calm water, typically in the protected bays around Copacabana, Ipanema or Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Most groups are small and mixed ability; instructors stay close and the paddling is gentle rather than athletic. You’ll get decent views of the coastline and Sugarloaf, but it’s more about being on the water than hardcore exercise. Water is warm, so falls are refreshing rather than shocking.
Best time is the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) when the weather is stable, winds are lighter in the morning, and crowds are thinner. Avoid peak summer (Dec–Feb) if you dislike heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $45–75 USD for a group lesson including board, paddle, life vest and transport from nearby beaches. Private sessions run $90–130.
Pick a morning lesson – the sea is usually flatter and the light is better. Skip the big party-boat SUP tours if you actually want to learn technique; they’re more floating bar than lesson. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone. If you’ve never paddled before, a private or semi-private session is worth the small extra cost.
