Expect warm, calm water and mostly beginner-friendly conditions whether you’re on the ocean or paddling up mangrove rivers. The ocean tours near Playa Hermosa or Papagayo tend to be relaxed with some small waves and nice views of the coastline and volcanoes in the distance. River/mangrove trips are flatter, quieter, and better for spotting birds, monkeys, and crocodiles. Both are fun, but the mangrove version feels more like a nature tour while the ocean one is a classic beach paddle. Crowds are light compared to Tamarindo or Nosara, and guides usually keep groups small.

Best time is December through April when winds are lighter in the morning and the dry season keeps the water clearer. June–October can work but expect more rain, occasional wind, and murkier rivers. Pick a morning departure to avoid the strongest afternoon winds. Skip anything advertised as a “sunset tour” on the ocean unless you’re an experienced paddler; the wind often picks up late in the day and turns it into a workout instead of a relaxing paddle.
