Stingray Encounter in Nassau: What to Know

Expect to stand in knee-to-waist-deep water on a sandy bank while southern stingrays glide around you. The rays are used to people and will brush against your legs looking for food. Guides demonstrate how to shuffle your feet, feed them, and lift them for photos. The whole swim lasts 20-30 minutes before you head to a beach for lunch and free time. It’s tame, family-friendly, and feels more like a petting zoo than a wild encounter. Kids five and up usually love it; adults often say it’s fine once but not something they’d repeat yearly.

Best time is December through April when the water is cooler and clearer. Summer brings warmer but murkier conditions and more chance of afternoon rain. Expect to pay around $90–$150 per person depending on whether it’s just the stingray stop or bundled with a beach day and lunch. Private or smaller-group trips sit at the higher end.

Pick the shorter excursions that focus on one sandbar rather than packed catamaran party boats. Skip the add-on “swim with sharks” if it’s offered—most travelers say the sharks are in a separate, less natural pen and feel like a tourist trap. Bring water shoes; the bottom can be uneven.
