Bondi surf lessons are straightforward: show up, get a quick safety talk and some basic paddling instruction on the sand, then spend most of the two hours in the water trying to catch whitewater waves. Groups are usually 6-10 people with one instructor, so expect some waiting between turns. The experience is fun and surprisingly tiring even if you don't stand up much. Instructors keep it safe and light-hearted; most people leave grinning even if they spend half the time falling off. Water is usually 17-21°C depending on season – you'll wear a wetsuit.
Best time is November to April when the water is warmer and days are longer. Summer can get crowded with tourists, but mornings are calmer. Expect to pay around A$80-130 for a two-hour beginner group lesson including board and wetsuit. Private lessons run A$150-250. Book ahead in peak season (Dec-Feb) or you'll pay more and get worse slots.
Pick a small-group lesson early in the morning if you can – fewer people, better waves, less chaos. Skip the big tour-company packages that bundle the lesson with a harbour cruise or bus pass; they're usually more expensive and the surf bit gets rushed. If you're completely unfit or scared of waves, consider a private lesson for the first go.
