Surf Lessons in Santa Catalina, Panama

Santa Catalina offers one of Panama's most consistent and beginner-friendly waves, especially at Playa El Estero. A typical 1.5-hour private lesson starts with 20-30 minutes on the sand covering basics like paddling, popping up, and ocean safety, then heads into the water for hands-on practice. Expect small to medium waves that are forgiving for first-timers, though the tropical sun is intense and the water feels warm year-round. Instructors are generally patient and will spend most of the time pushing you into waves so you get the feel of riding early.

The dry season from December to April brings the best conditions: smaller, cleaner waves and less rain. June to November can work but often means bigger swells, stronger currents, and afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $50-90 for a private 90-minute lesson including board and instructor; group lessons run cheaper per person but you'll get less attention. Renting gear separately costs extra if you want to practice afterward.

Book a private lesson if it's your first time; group classes often waste time waiting for turns. Skip trying to learn on your own the first day; the rip currents here are real and the local break breaks in a way that confuses beginners. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and water. After the lesson, grab fresh seafood in town and watch the sunset from the beach.
