A surf lesson in Nadi usually means heading 30-45 minutes south to Natadola Beach, the only reliable beginner spot in the area. Expect a gentle beach break with soft sand bottom, waist-to-chest high waves, and instructors who put you on a big soft-top board. Most lessons run 1.5–2 hours and include transport from your Nadi hotel, basic instruction, and time in the water. It’s genuinely fun if you’ve never surfed, but don’t expect barreling perfection – this is a safe, forgiving introduction rather than a proper surf trip.
The best time is the dry season from May to October when winds are lighter and seas are calmer. December to March can bring bigger swells and rain, which sometimes closes Natadola. Expect to pay around FJD 150–280 per person for a group lesson including gear and transfer; private lessons sit closer to FJD 350–450. Reef trips to Cloudbreak or Restaurants are for experienced surfers only and cost significantly more.
Pick a small-group lesson (4–6 people max) at Natadola if you’re a beginner or with kids. Skip the big bus tours that dump 20 people in the water at once – you’ll spend most of the time waiting for a turn. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash shirt, and a waterproof phone pouch. If you can already surf, you’re usually better off renting a board and going independently or booking a boat trip straight to the reefs.
