Swimming with Nurse Sharks in the Maldives

Expect to enter waist-deep or slightly deeper water on a sandy bottom where a dozen or more nurse sharks, often 2–3 meters long, cruise around you. They’re genuinely docile and uninterested in people, so you’ll be snorkeling just a few meters away from them for 30–60 minutes while guides toss small fish to keep them around. It feels surprisingly calm rather than adrenaline-filled. The sharks glide past without bumping you; the main excitement is simply being that close to large sharks in clear water. Visibility is usually excellent, but the bottom gets stirred up quickly once the feeding starts.

The best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is highest, though trips run year-round. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a half-day trip from Male or nearby resorts/atolls, including boat, guide, snorkel gear, and lunch. Longer trips that combine Vaavu Atoll shark snorkeling with other stops sit at the higher end.

Pick a smaller group trip if possible; the experience is far better with 8–12 people instead of 30. Skip the ‘dive with sharks’ upsell if you’re not a certified diver—snorkeling gives you the same encounter at lower cost and stress. Bring your own mask if you have a good fit; rental gear is often average.
