A swimming cruise on Lake Geneva is exactly what it sounds like: you board a boat, it takes you out onto the lake, drops anchor in clean water, and you jump in for a swim. The water is usually a striking turquoise and surprisingly clear once you're a few hundred meters from shore. Expect 60-90 minutes total with 20-40 minutes of actual swimming time, often with a second stop for photos or a quick snack. The boats are basic but functional – think benches, a small changing area or ladder, and life jackets if you want them. It's relaxed rather than luxurious; you'll share the space with a mixed crowd of locals and tourists.
The best time is mid-June to early September when the water temperature sits between 18-24°C. July and August are warmest but busiest. Expect to pay around CHF 45-75 per person depending on whether it's a simple swim cruise or one that includes a light drink or longer route. Morning departures tend to have calmer water and fewer people.
Pick the shorter direct swim-focused trips over the long scenic ones that only give you 15 minutes in the water. Skip the ones that combine swimming with a heavy lunch service – the timing rarely works well and the food is rarely worth it. Bring quick-dry swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and a towel; the boat towels are often tiny and already damp by the time you get them.
