Lake Geneva offers clean, refreshing water with beautiful Alpine views on a clear day. Expect chilly temperatures even in summer (around 18–22°C), so it feels invigorating rather than relaxing. The bottom is often rocky or pebbly near shore, and visibility is generally good. Popular spots have ladders, small beaches, or jetties; elsewhere you'll be jumping from rocks or grass. Water quality is usually excellent but can vary after heavy rain. It's a casual local activity – you'll see families, groups of friends, and older Swiss swimmers who treat it like their daily constitutional.
The best time is mid-June through early September when air temperatures are warmest. July and August are peak, with water at its warmest, though weekends get busy. Expect to pay around 5–15 CHF for access to managed swimming areas with changing rooms, toilets, and sometimes a small café. Free swimming is possible at many public spots but you'll need to bring your own towel and find a place to change discreetly. A meal or drink afterwards at a lakeside spot can add another 20–40 CHF.
Pick a spot with a proper ladder or steps if you're not a strong swimmer – jumping in from height looks fun until you realize getting out is harder. Skip swimming right after heavy storms when runoff can temporarily affect water quality. Bring water shoes if you hate sharp pebbles, and go in the morning before the breeze picks up in the afternoon.
