A day trip to the Taj Mahal from Delhi means leaving your hotel around 6am and getting back around 9-10pm. You'll spend about 3.5 hours each way in the car, often on decent but busy highways. Once there, the Taj itself is breathtaking for the first 20 minutes; after that it's mostly crowds, heat, and marble that gets uncomfortably hot by midday. Most tours also stop at Agra Fort, which is genuinely interesting and far less crowded. Expect long security lines, aggressive souvenir sellers, and the need to remove your shoes inside the main mausoleum. It's tiring but doable if the Taj is high on your list.
The best time to go is November to February when it's cooler and the air is clearer for photos. Avoid summer (April-June) unless you enjoy 40°C+ heat. Expect to pay around $55-90 per person for a private car tour with driver and guide; cheaper group tours exist but add more stops and waiting time. Solo travelers or couples usually prefer private options.
Pick a tour that includes Agra Fort and skips the overpriced "shopping stops" many operators push for commissions. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes you don't mind removing, and download an offline audio guide so you can wander at your own pace instead of sticking with a group the whole time. If you're short on time or energy, consider flying to Agra instead.
