Is a Tamsui Day Trip Worth It?

Tamsui is a relaxed riverside town at the northern tip of Taipei. Expect a mix of old streets lined with snack stalls, a few historic temples and buildings, a pleasant waterfront promenade, and the famous sunset over the Tamsui River. It’s not a sleepy village anymore — it gets busy with local tourists on weekends — but it still feels noticeably slower than central Taipei. Most people combine it with a short walk along the old street, seafood snacks, and watching the sunset from the Fishermen’s Wharf area. You can easily do it in half a day, though many stay until after dark.

The best time is spring or autumn on a weekday. Summers are hot and humid, and weekends get crowded. Expect to pay around NT$800–1,500 total per person from Taipei, covering round-trip transport (MRT or bus), snacks, lunch, and a few small admissions. It’s one of the cheaper day trips you can do.

Pick the sunset at Fishermen’s Wharf and the old street snacks. Skip trying to see every minor temple or museum — they’re average at best. My advice: take the MRT all the way to Tamsui, walk the promenade north, eat what looks good, and just enjoy the breeze and views instead of rushing between every photo spot.
