Taronga sits on a steep hillside overlooking Sydney Harbour, so expect a workout. The views are genuinely spectacular, especially from the upper parts, and the animal collection is strong on Australian species – koalas, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, plus the usual big cats, giraffes and chimps. It’s a proper zoo with decent habitats, but it still involves a lot of walking up and down slopes. The ferry ride across the harbour is one of the best parts; arriving by boat feels like a mini adventure and saves you the worst of the hill at the start.
Best time is spring (Sep–Nov) or autumn (Mar–May) when the weather is mild and animals are active. Summer gets hot and crowded, winter is quieter but some animals hide from the cold. Expect to pay around $70–90 per adult for entry; adding a ferry return ticket, a couple of paid encounters or lunch pushes it to $110–150 per person. Families should budget extra for food and souvenirs.
Pick the seal and bird shows if you only have time for one or two – they’re genuinely entertaining. Skip the ropeway cable car unless you hate walking; it’s overpriced for what it is. Get there at opening time, see the upper zoo first while everyone else is still arriving, then work your way down.
