Temple Stay in Seoul: What It's Really Like

Temple stays in Seoul give you a quiet break from the city’s noise. You sleep in a simple ondol room on the temple grounds, wake up around 4am for the morning chanting, eat strictly vegetarian temple food (usually excellent), and join a few programs like meditation, tea ceremony, or a short hike. The schedule is structured but not overwhelming—expect about half the day guided, the rest free to rest or wander the quiet grounds. It’s genuinely peaceful, though the early mornings and shared bathrooms take some adjustment. Phones are usually allowed but many people switch them to airplane mode.

Best time is spring (April–May) for cherry blossoms or autumn (September–October) for crisp air and fall colors; summer is humid and winter is cold but beautiful if you don’t mind the chill. Expect to pay around $60–110 per night including all meals and programs—cheaper than most hotels and the food alone is worth it. Pick a mid-sized temple with an English program so you understand what’s happening. Skip the big weekend group retreats if you want actual quiet; go mid-week instead. Bring comfortable loose clothes, socks that don’t slip on wooden floors, and an open mind—the experience is simple but surprisingly memorable.
