Tennoji Zoo is a compact, old-school city zoo right next to Tennoji Station and the lively Shinsekai neighborhood. Expect a relaxed half-day visit rather than a full wildlife safari. The animal collection is modest – elephants, lions, penguins, and a decent primate area – but the enclosures are dated compared to modern zoos. It's clean, easy to walk in an hour or two, and the surrounding park and temple make it a convenient stop when you're already in southern Osaka. Families with small kids will get the most out of it; adults without children might find it skippable unless they really like animals.
Best time is spring (March–May) for cherry blossoms in the park or autumn (October–November) when the weather is pleasant. Avoid summer if you hate humidity and winter if you don't want to see animals hiding from the cold. Expect to pay around ¥500–700 for an adult ticket; kids are cheaper and combination tickets with the adjacent botanical garden or Osaka Pass discounts can bring the effective cost down. Add ¥1000–1500 if you want simple food or drinks inside.
Tip: Go early in the morning when animals are more active and crowds are thinner. Skip the reptile house if you're short on time – it's underwhelming. Pair it with a walk through Shinsekai for kushikatsu and retro vibes instead of trying to stretch the zoo visit beyond two hours.
