Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon: Worth It?

Expect an early start—most balloons launch at dawn. You'll be picked up from Mexico City between 5-6am, driven an hour north, and spend about 45-60 minutes floating silently over the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon as the sun rises. The views are genuinely spectacular: the ancient city layout becomes clear from above, and the light is soft and golden. After landing you usually get a basic breakfast and, if you chose the combo, a guided walk around the site before the crowds arrive. Total day trip is 7-9 hours door-to-door. It's touristy but the flight itself still feels special.

Best time is dry season (November to April), especially December-February for clearest skies and calmest winds. Avoid rainy season (June-September) when flights are frequently cancelled. Expect to pay around $200-320 per person for the balloon flight including transport from CDMX; adding pyramid access and a guide pushes it toward the higher end. Pure flight-only options without pickup are cheaper but a hassle to arrange yourself.

Tip: Book the version that includes early pyramid access so you can climb them while they're still empty—it's the best part of the combo. Skip the cave breakfast add-on; it's usually rushed and not worth the extra money. Choose operators that fly in smaller baskets (under 12 people) if you can; the experience is noticeably better.
