Expect a massive archaeological site about an hour northeast of Mexico City. The two main pyramids (Sun and Moon) are genuinely impressive up close, especially if you climb the Pyramid of the Sun for the view across the Avenue of the Dead. A standard half-day tour includes pickup from your hotel, transport, a guide who explains the history and myths, and a couple of hours on-site. It gets hot and crowded by 11am; the scale is bigger than most people anticipate, so wear good shoes and bring water. The experience is part history lesson, part workout, and very photogenic, but it’s exposed with little shade.
Best time to go is the dry season (November to April), especially on weekdays. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person depending on whether you choose a small-group van tour or a private driver-guide setup. Skip the big bus tours that leave at 8am with 40 other people; they waste time at a “shopping stop” on the way back. Instead, book a morning-only tour that gets you there right when it opens. If you’re short on time or energy, a private tour is worth the extra money for flexibility and fewer crowds.
