Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Worth It?

The Thyssen is the most manageable of Madrid’s big three art museums. Expect a calm, well-lit building with a genuinely broad collection spanning from medieval altarpieces and Italian Renaissance to 20th-century American pop art. You’ll see works by Titian, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Monet, Hopper and Lichtenstein without the overwhelming crowds that hit the Prado and Reina Sofía. Two to three hours is enough for a proper visit; four if you’re an art nerd. The layout is straightforward and the temporary exhibitions are usually strong.

Best time is October–April on a weekday morning. Summers are hotter and busier; weekends can feel crowded after 11 am. Expect to pay around €12–20 for a standard ticket with audio guide. Guided tours push the total closer to €30–40. Free entry windows exist on certain afternoons but come with longer lines and limited time.

Tip: get the basic ticket and rent the audio guide only for the permanent collection; skip the guided tour unless you really want a live narrator. Skip the basement gift shop and the on-site restaurant—they’re average. Pair it with the Prado on the same day only if you buy skip-the-line tickets for both and wear comfortable shoes.
