Tijuca Forest Hike: Worth It in Rio?

Tijuca is a real rainforest right inside Rio with proper trails, waterfalls, and serious views. Expect a humid, shaded hike that can get steep quickly. The most popular route to Pedra Bonita gives you a solid workout and sweeping views over the city and ocean, but it’s exposed at the top so sun and wind hit hard. Wildlife is mostly birds and butterflies; monkeys are possible but not guaranteed. The whole thing usually takes 3–5 hours depending on which trail you pick. It feels surprisingly wild for being so close to the city, though weekends bring more locals and music from portable speakers.

Best time is the shoulder seasons (March–May or September–November) when it’s warmer but not yet the full summer downpours. Avoid December–February if you hate mud and lightning risks; the forest gets slippery fast. Expect to pay around $80–130 per person for a half-day guided trip that includes pickup, park fees, and water. Independent entry is cheap but you’ll still need transport and a map.

Pick the Pedra Bonita trail if you want views without killing yourself; skip the full Tijuca Peak hike unless you’re very fit and want a longer day. Bring your own bug spray and wear proper trail shoes—flip-flops are a terrible idea here.
