Trabi Driving in Berlin: Worth It?

Driving a Trabi feels exactly like what it is: piloting a noisy, smoky, two-stroke plastic car from the old East Germany through modern Berlin traffic. Expect it to be slow (max about 60 km/h feels optimistic), smelly, and surprisingly fun for the first 30 minutes. You’ll follow a guide in a convoy, stopping at key spots like the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Brandenburg Gate. It’s not a quiet sightseeing tour – the engine is loud, the suspension is basic, and everyone stares or laughs as you chug past. The experience is more about the novelty of driving the car than deep history lessons.

Best time is late spring through early autumn. Summer is busiest but the cars are more reliable in warm weather; avoid deep winter as the old vehicles hate the cold. Expect to pay around €80–€150 per person depending on tour length (60–90 minutes is standard). Shorter city-center loops are cheaper; longer ones that reach the outer Wall memorials cost more.

Pick the self-drive option where you follow the guide’s car rather than having an instructor crammed in with you. Skip any add-on “VIP” or extended photography stops – they mostly just add time without much value. If you’re tall or have bad knees, think twice; these things are tiny inside.
